Juneteenth Celebration at Fitchburg Abolitionist Park

Fitchburg Abolitionist Park celebrated Juneteenth 2022 by holding its inaugural ceremony! The community was invited to a performance that included live music and a flag raising. The Forge was thrilled to participate in this event by presenting original scenes devised by students from Longsjo Middle School and Frances Drake Elementary School under the direction of Pamela Kathleen Hill. The scenes gave the students occasion to research Fitchburg and Leominster’s role in the Underground Railroad and Abolition; the Civil Rights Movement; and today’s search for racial equality.

This event was generously supported by Friends of Abolitionist Park, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Fitchburg Cultural Council, Leominster Cultural Council, and Fitchburg State University.
